Layering is the single most important subject for sailors to understand when they are planning what to wear. Correct layering will not only keep you a lot warmer but will also keep you dry by wicking moisture away from your skin. Gill recommends the following three layer system of base, mid and waterproof outer layer for maximum comfort.
|
The Base Layer:
The base or wicking layer, which should be worn next to the skin, is designed to move moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry and warm after bursts of activity. Gill have two weights of base layers - i2 Lite, which will keep you cooler during highly aerobic activity and i2 Tec which provides excellent insulation as part of a winter layering system. |
The Mid Layer:
The middle or insulating layer is designed to be worn over the base layer and under an outer layer. Made from synthetic thermal fibres, it assists the movement of moisture to the outer layer. The fibres do not absorb water, therefore dry quickly and keep you warm.
As with the base layer, Gill has mid layer products in different fabric weights. These range from Gill's i3 lightweight micro fleece and versatile Arctic fleece garments to the i5 Crosswind which has ultra compact synthetic insulation and is made from a fully taped, waterproof and breathable laminated fabric. |
The Outer Layer:
The waterproof outer layer is intended to keep the elements out. These usually have very little or no thermal properties, but are entirely water and windproof.
In order to work most efficiently no matter what type of sailing you do, the fabric should be breathable to allow the moist air that has build up inside the garment to escape. |
